Michael Canzian on Why You Should Learn Boating
Michael Canzian on why you should learn boating |
When summer comes,
one of the activities that I immediately plan with my family is boating. It’s a
leisure activity that we all get to enjoy–it’s relaxing yet also thrilling. Not
to mention, being that we are near or on water, we get to do other water activities
such as swimming, surfing, jet-skiing, and fishing. This is also the time where
we get to bond as a family or spend time with our friends. When I am surrounded
by nature, I am drawn to appreciate its beauty while cherishing the moments I
create with the people around me.
I had my first boat
when I was 10 years old. I grew up on a river and always had a boat. My stepdad
taught me about boats including restoring and working on them, learning about safe boating guidelines,
preparing boat gear, putting in docks, and where and how to navigate tricky
shorelines or changing sandbars. Moreover, he also taught me about skippering
at a young age which is why I was able to go solo at a young age. It is not
just hopping on the boat and going, but there are various preparations that
come into play. Boating is a lot of responsibility–being in charge of the boat
and prioritizing the safety of the people on it and around it is most
important.
Boating is a great exercise
Driving a boat is
fun yet demanding in many ways. It requires knowledge, passion, various skills
including navigation, equipment operations, systems and mechanical
expertise. Also, knowing the rules provides a safe
experience for those onboard and those who are sharing the water; especially in
busy areas.
Boating reduces stress
Although aspects of
boating can be hectic and stressful, it also provides an opportunity to connect
with nature and enjoy the peace and calm of a sunset or slow rolling waves
against the hull thus reducing stress.
Boating with family and friends also creates memorable moments for fun,
sport and conversation.
Boating is a form of bonding
Typically, you are
with your friends, family, while boating,
which offers the opportunity to bond. You get quality time on the boat away
from all the stress as you enjoy the
beauty of nature and the presence of those closest to you. The quality time you
spend with them on the boat will always be a memorable experience.
This is certainly
an activity that is as versatile as it gets. You may enjoy a romantic getaway
with your partner, teach children about fishing or boating, or relax with your
friends. It is guaranteed that everyone would love boating unless of course
they get seasick.
Boating teaches you about life
There is something
about nature that impels you to reflect on life. Boating is one of those
activities that will encourage you to come to nature as you are. It allows you
to reevaluate your identity, beliefs, perspectives, and priorities in life in a
much deeper sense.
Observing and
cruising from harbor to harbor gives that feeling of calmness , especially when
finding that perfect, tranquil spot to drop anchor. Take time to observe,
listen, and feel the environment and deeper contemplation of life may ensue.
Boating is an engaging and rewarding activity
When people plan
for summer activities, boating is usually one of the things that they think of
since it is an all-around activity that offers quality time and plenty of
fun.
Whatever your goal
is for skippering a boat, whether it be about teaching your children how to
operate safely or providing a relaxing experience for the people around you,
gazing at the waters, observing the sky, or practicing your boating skills, it
will always be an engaging and rewarding activity. – Michael Canzian
